The Taming of the Shrew Annotated Customer Reviews
:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- It's a great idea; take advantage : As the possessor of a bachelor's degree in English, reading this felt like cheating. But the linguistic distance between Shakespeare and us is so great at times that some of his rich language and imagery is completely lost in the process of trying to grasp archaic expressions and idioms. In college, the constant flipping between text and annotations made it hard to concentrate on the action, which of course was visual to its original audience and not just words on a page as it is to us. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from KED -- These books make Shakespeare accessible to students! : I bought this for my classroom to help the students who are struggling with the play. The side-by-side function allows them to look from the original line to a "translated line" so that they can understand and become more familiar with the language (making it easier as they go along/future plays). - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Avery Little -- Better than Midsummer's, that's for sure! : I will admit that while I am not a huge fan of Shakespeare, mostly for the language, I did really enjoy this book. By far one of my favorite books by him, and also one that I felt was ACTUALLY humorous, compared to some of the other comedies. It was definitely sexist, but I think that it kind of expected based on the time it was written. I would suggest to anyone looking for an easier Shakespeare read or one to introduce them into his works. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2017 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from D&S Blake -- Not annotated : I received the paperback version of this book. It is not annotated. It is not in simpler English. There is no side by side comparison. There is not one single note or translation in the entire book. This is just the original version of the story with a biography of Shakespeare at the beginning. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Farmer Brown -- Easy to read, fun edition. : Clear and well spaced printing. No side modern definitions however. Anyhow a humorous Shakespeare play, easily accessible today. Get it for some enjoyment. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shelley Chapman -- Highly recommended : I dared to attempt this play with my upper-intermediate EFL students, and it went down very well! I don't think it would have been possible without this particular version, as we mostly read together the modern version, cutting to the original text at various moments of the play. It was nice to have the students actually understand and laugh at appropriate moments instead of blankly continuing to read without comprehending. Having the original text to one side means they can go back at their leisure and read it with more understanding. I recommend this version for beginners of Shakespeare and for non-native speakers of English. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016 )
